How to use the Family Tree

The best way to use the Family Tree is to start by searching a person. I suggest you search for yourself (you must be logged in). Use the search box located at the top and just enter your first name. Next click the following icon under "Options for this individual" . This will display the chart of your mother and father, grandparents, and great grandparents.

If any of this information is not listed you should enter this information in, this is another common use of the family tree.

How to add a new family member?

Lastly, Enter the person’s Firstname/Given Names, and Lastname/Surname. You can also include whatever other information you might have like birthdate, but it’s not manditory.

How to edit or add to someone’s information?

Another common use of the family tree is to change or add to someone’s information if someone is already listed in the family tree.

First, Search and click on the name of the person you want to change their information.

Second, under "Options for individual" click the "Edit" link, a new window will open.

A World of Mallamace

The world of Mallamace’s just got smaller today. With all the social networking tools sites like Facebook and Twitter staying connected with family members and friends has strangers with the unique last name, Mallamace, a little closer. There are Mallamaces in all parts of the world, from Italy, United States, Australia, Agentina, and even China. What makes a Mallamace unique? Many things, but most notably is the origin of all Mallamace families. To show how unique the Mallamace name is, there are several known families with the last name (California/Bologia, New York/Georgia,  2 distinct families in Melborne/China, Reggio Calabria/Milian). It’s unclear if any of these families are closely related–since Mallamace is considered a “place name”, but one thing is clear, all Mallamaces owe their ultimate origins to the southern region of Italy in the province of Calabria.

Where did the name Mallamace come from? First, the Calabria region is known for being a Greek settlement as part of Magna Græcia (Latin meaning “Greater Greece”) . And second, in the Hills of the Aspromonte overlooking the ocean between Sicily and the southern most region of mainland Italy there is a church called the Santuario della Madonna di Mallamace. According to”, built on the ruins of a small 14th century church, it keeps inside a splendid statue of the Virgin in white marble placed on an altar of great artistic interest. The Sanctuary is now managed by a monastic community. translated it reads, “The Shrine of Our Lady of Mallamace.”

The name Mallamace also has some unique spellings, most notably “Mallemace” and “Mallamaci.”

One of the stories that has been told, but not confirmed, is that the Mallamaces decended from 3 sons of Greek royalty who were sent to Reggio Calabria during some war to hide them from the King’s enemies.

Mallamaces in Melbourne: There are 2 distinct and unrelated families (at least in recent generations). From one side of the first family, there are 2 brothers and their families. One of the brothers has had 2 kids, 1 Male and 1 Female (no longer a Mallamace). The other brother has had 5 kids all of whom have their own families now. All these Mallamaces still live in Melbourne. From the second side we do not know much about the other Mallamaces in Melbourne.

Mallamaces in California: Two brother’s traveled from Reggio Calabria to New York, one following the other one at a later date, leaving their sisters (one possibily deceased 1906 earthquake) . They both found their way to New York, like most new U.S. immigrants. Once the first brother, the same brother who initially came to America, moved to California the other brother followed. They both started families in California.  The brother who followed had 3 children. One child, male, started a family, they had one boy (that’s where the Mallamace line stops); another child, also male, had 2 boys & 1 girl. The last child was female (no longer a Mallamace).

According to a document called “Codex Astensis Qui De Malabayla Comuniter Nuncupatur” the name Mallamace dates back as far as 1095.  And is, “e stato il primo Costituente della Signoria di Asti e ci indica come consoli del borgo di Annone vicino a Asti prima come Consoli poi come Conti” translated “was the first Constituent Assembly of the Lordship of Asti, and shows us how to consuls of the village of Hanno near Asti first as consuls then as Conti” according to Daniele Mallamace.

The New meaning of Open Source

I believe currently a major reorganization is happening in the software that most people in the tech industry don’t understand. It’s centered around Open Source, or source code that is open, free to use & develop with.

The original meaning of Open Source meant a freely distributed non-proprietary software (synonymous with GPL). Not long after Open Source’s re-birth 2006, the Open Source meaning quickly became exploited as a sales technique by companies like Google, Oracle, & Microsoft to name a few in 2009, resulting in a new meaning of Open Source:

I’ll show you the source, I’ll show you how to use it, but I still own it & make the rules.

The obfuscated meaning of Open Source from something free and openly distributed without reservation is now, in part, why some in the software industry that are worried by the emerging Open Source market.

The cozy days of a software company colaborating on a software and figuring out how to sell it to a target audience is over.

Open Source has one rule, whatever is best will win. A successful Open Source application doesn’t need a marketing strategy to find users, investors to finance it’s development, or even a specific owner to call his own. A true Open Source application is an organic independent entity freely distributed without reservation or ownership.

Just like in a free market, now people will quickly adopt whatever software will fit their needs for the best value. With Open source, companies are no longer trying to sell their software and jamming it down the throats of consumers. Software companies are competing with software that most acurrately fits the needs of public, software designed by the public.

What does this mean for developers and the tech industry? Software companies will need to spend less time developing their software, instead more time empowering their users to develop strategies that meet user needs, keeping pace user demand. The very minimal a sustainable software can do right now, is create an API for some basic development on it’s software. Software companies that don’t fully implement this strategy with their product will be left vulnerable to companies that do. Here’s a short list of successful software companies & products that dominate in their field.

VoIP will kill the Cell Phone as we know it

With the introduction of VoIP like Skype and Google Voice to smart phones like Motorola’s Google Phone DROID, and Apple’s iPhone… it’s turning Wireless Phone companies into Wireless Internet companies.

Verizon’s $100 unlimited calls to the US can’t compete with Skype’s $3 unlimited calls to US and Canada.

Just like Video killed the Radio Star, VoIP will kill the Cell Phone as we know it.

Don’t believe the C02 Calculator, It’s a number game

This is another case of making up statistical information for the sake of "Saving the World" and letting everyone know that you’re a bad human. It’s a number game. I’ve seen this too many times where someone on TV poops out a number, and that number is supposed to be an accurate representation of the world’s problems. Here’s my example: On CNN international yesterday there’s a new series called ‘Going Green’ (see The host was talking about an online calculator that is supposed to determine how much C02 you produce. The ‘Going Green’ host talked about a trip her co-host took recently. She calculated how much c02 he produced on a flight to Argentina and figured he emitted 120 Tons of c02 in his plane trip. This is rape of statistical data. There’s no scientific study to backup the calculations she made. Thought this was an important topic, because it’s been done again. CNN has put another article out in something they call ‘Eco Solutions’ about "How Much Does this Article Produce?" (see This is another example of number games that conveniently "proves" a point. While I totally support being sustainable, I think that includes not sustaining the wacky c02 number game. Going green is Going Insane. Let’s all take a deep breath of Oxygen, exhale some c02, plant a tree.

Farrah Fawcett’s dying wish

So Farrah Fawcett goes to heaven…
And she’s at the pearly gates, and God says you’ve been a good angel on earth, I know you’ll be a good angel in heaven.
God says I’ll grant you 1 wish for your good deeds….
Farrah Fawcett replies "I wish all the little children on earth to be safe."
And later that day Michael Jackson dies.
